Housing

Housing in Nongstoin is a blend of traditional and modern architecture. Older structures often feature the classic "Assam-type" design—wood and plaster walls with slanted corrugated tin roofs to withstand heavy monsoon rains and minor earthquakes.

In recent decades, there has been a significant shift toward modern Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) buildings, particularly in the commercial center and newly developed neighborhoods. Most homes are single-family dwellings or small multi-story family compounds. Because land is governed by customary Khasi laws, non-tribals face strict restrictions on purchasing property, meaning the real estate market is almost entirely localized.
