Agriculture is the lifeblood of the Ri-Bhoi district, and Nongpoh acts as its primary marketplace. The region's warm, humid climate and fertile soil make it an agricultural powerhouse within Meghalaya.
Nongpoh is most famous for its Kew pineapples, which are highly sought after for their sweetness and size. The hillsides surrounding the town are covered in pineapple orchards, banana plantations, and groves of areca nut (betel nut or *kwai*) and betel leaf. Other major crops include ginger, turmeric, papaya, and broom grass. Traditional shifting cultivation (jhum) is still practiced in rural peripheries, though there is a steady transition toward settled, organic farming supported by state government initiatives.
