Government

Jowai is governed locally by the Jowai Municipal Board, which is responsible for civic infrastructure, sanitation, and urban development.

Administratively, it is the headquarters of the West Jaintia Hills district, housing the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police. Politically, the city is represented in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly by the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Jowai constituency.

Additionally, traditional governance structures still hold significant sway. The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), established under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, oversees matters related to tribal laws, land rights, and traditional customs.
