While urban Jowai is not primarily agricultural, it serves as the crucial marketplace for the rich agricultural output of the West Jaintia Hills district.
The surrounding rural areas are known for producing rice, maize, and potatoes. Most notably, the region is famous for Lakadong Turmeric, a high-value, geographically indicated (GI) crop prized globally for its exceptionally high curcumin content. Other significant cash crops include ginger, betel leaf (pan), and betel nut (kwai). Livestock rearing, particularly piggery and poultry, is a common supplementary livelihood, and fresh produce is brought daily into Jowai's markets.
