Ukhrul is nestled in the Patkai mountain range, which forms the rugged border between India and Myanmar. The geography of the region is characterized by steep, parallel ridges and deep river valleys, heavily forested with a mix of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The town itself is situated on an elongated ridge, providing sweeping views of the valleys below.
The region's geography plays host to exceptional biodiversity. The Shirui Kashong peak, located just outside the main town, is famous for the endemic Shirui Lily. The forests surrounding Ukhrul are home to various wildlife species, including tragopans, wild boars, and occasionally passing leopards.
The soil is highly fertile in the valleys, supporting both traditional shifting cultivation (jhum) and settled terrace farming. Due to its elevated position, the terrain requires winding hill roads, making travel scenic but occasionally challenging during the monsoon season.
