Agriculture forms the bedrock of Thoubal's identity and economy. The fertile alluvial soil of the Imphal Valley allows for high-yield farming. Paddy (rice) is the dominant crop, cultivated extensively during the monsoon season.
In addition to rice, farmers grow cash crops such as sugarcane, mustard, potatoes, pulses, and a wide variety of seasonal vegetables. Pisciculture (fish farming) is highly developed, utilizing the natural wetlands (like Waithou Pat) and private ponds to meet the massive local demand for fish, a staple of the Manipuri diet. Forestry and small-scale poultry farming also supplement rural incomes.
