While Imphal itself is urbanized, the surrounding Imphal Valley is the agricultural breadbasket of Manipur. Rice is the absolute staple crop, dominating the agricultural landscape.
In the peripheral areas of the city and the broader valley, farmers also cultivate maize, pulses, mustard, and a variety of seasonal vegetables. The region is known for horticultural products like pineapples, passion fruit, and king chili (U-morok). Fisheries also play a significant role, with fish being a vital component of the local diet, often cultivated in local ponds and nearby lakes. There is a growing movement toward organic farming in the state, with Imphal serving as the primary market for organic produce.
