The administration has also installed desalination plants (Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination - LTTD) to convert seawater into potable drinking water. * **Sewerage:** Mostly relies on individual septic tanks. The highly porous coral soil requires careful management to prevent contamination of the freshwater lens. * **Telecommunications:** BSNL provides cellular and basic broadband services. Airtel has also expanded its 4G network to the island. A recently inaugurated undersea submarine optical fiber cable connecting Kochi to Lakshadweep has significantly improved internet speeds and reliability.
