Infrastructure on Agatti presents unique challenges due to its isolation. Historically, electricity was generated entirely by polluting and expensive diesel generators; however, recent initiatives by the government have successfully introduced solar power plants to the island, moving toward a hybrid and greener grid.
Freshwater is a critical issue. To supplement the fragile groundwater lens—which can become easily contaminated by seawater intrusion or sewage—the government has installed large-scale Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plants to convert seawater into potable drinking water. Telecommunications and internet connectivity are provided by BSNL, though broadband speeds and mobile connectivity can sometimes be erratic compared to the mainland.
