Zanskar experiences a high-altitude cold desert climate (Köppen climate classification: *BWk*), heavily influenced by its elevation and the rain shadow of the Great Himalayas.
Winters are notoriously long and brutal, lasting from October to May. Temperatures frequently plummet to -30°C (-22°F) and heavy snowfall routinely blocks all high mountain passes, historically isolating the valley for up to seven months a year. Summers are brief, lasting from June to September, but are generally dry and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), though nights remain cold.
Rainfall is exceedingly rare, averaging less than 100 mm annually. The region relies almost entirely on winter snowfall and glacial melt for its water supply. The best time to visit for conventional tourism and trekking is between July and September, while the famous frozen river Chadar Trek takes place in January and February.
