Transportation in Zanskar is currently experiencing a historic revolution. For decades, the only vehicular access was a rough, 240 km unpaved mountain road from Kargil over the Pensi La pass, open only from roughly June to October.
Currently, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is nearing completion of the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha (NPD) road. This strategic highway will connect Zanskar directly to Leh in the north and Himachal Pradesh (via Lahaul) in the south, drastically reducing travel times and providing near year-round connectivity.
Within the valley, local transport relies on shared taxis (SUVs) and private vehicles. There is no rail network or commercial airport, though a small helipad in Padum is used for medical evacuations and government officials. Bicycles and motorcycles are increasingly popular among summer tourists.
