The population of Zanskar is estimated to be between 14,000 and 20,000 people, spread thinly across dozens of small, remote villages. The population density is exceptionally low, reflecting the harsh carrying capacity of the land.
Demographically, the population is predominantly of Tibetan and Indo-Aryan descent. About 95% of Zanskaris practice Tibetan Buddhism, giving the valley its distinct cultural and architectural character. A minority of Sunni Muslims, whose ancestors settled in the region several centuries ago, reside primarily in the administrative center of Padum.
The primary language spoken is Zanskari (a dialect of Ladakhi/Bhoti), though Hindi, Urdu, and English are increasingly understood by the younger generations and those involved in the tourism sector. Education levels are rising due to increased government and NGO interventions, but youth migration to Leh, Jammu, or Delhi for higher education and employment remains a significant trend.
