Infrastructure in Zanskar has historically been sparse but is rapidly developing.
Electricity was traditionally supplied by small, localized solar grids or micro-hydroelectric plants, providing only a few hours of power each evening. However, efforts to connect Padum and surrounding villages to the Northern Grid are progressing, vastly improving reliability.
Water supply is largely drawn directly from glacial streams and natural springs; modern indoor plumbing is becoming standard in new constructions in Padum but remains rare in remote villages. Telecommunications took a massive leap forward recently with the installation of 4G cellular towers by Jio, bringing high-speed broadband internet to the valley for the first time.
