Economy

Zanskar's economy is undergoing a massive transition from a traditional subsistence-based model to a cash economy driven by tourism and infrastructure development.

Historically, the economy relied entirely on subsistence agro-pastoralism. Today, tourism is the most significant economic driver. During the summer, trekking, monastery tours, and mountaineering bring crucial income. In the winter, the Chadar Trek provides a major economic boost for local guides, porters, and homestay operators.

The cost of living is relatively low for local staples but extraordinarily high for manufactured goods, fuel, and fresh produce imported during the brief summer window. Future economic development is heavily tied to the completion of the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha (NPD) road, which is expected to lower freight costs and increase year-round commercial activity.
