The region is almost exclusively Tibetan Buddhist. The 300-year-old Korzok Monastery serves as the spiritual center for the resident population and the nomadic Changpa people. The monastery houses a revered statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and beautiful *thangkas* (religious paintings). The lake itself is considered sacred by the locals, and visitors are expected to respect its sanctity by not washing or wading in the waters.
