Weather & climate

Thiksey experiences a cold arid (desert) climate, classified as Köppen BWk. Because of its extreme altitude, the weather is characterized by intense sunlight, low humidity, and dramatic temperature fluctuations between day and night.

Winters (October to April) are long, harsh, and freezing. Temperatures routinely drop to between -15°C and -20°C (5°F to -4°F) at night, with frequent snowfall that blankets the monastery and valley. Summers (May to September) are short but highly pleasant, featuring brilliant blue skies and daytime highs ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Rainfall is scarce, and the region relies almost entirely on winter snows for summer water. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is mild and all access roads to Ladakh are open.
