The topography of Thiksey is dominated by a central, rocky prominence upon which the Thiksey Monastery is built. The village cascades down the slopes of this hill, spreading out into the flatter, terraced agricultural lands of the Indus Valley floor.
The elevation of the village is roughly 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) above sea level. The surrounding topography is dramatic and severe, featuring steep mountain faces, narrow side canyons, and expansive, stony plateaus. The lowest points in the area are along the banks of the Indus River, while the immediate horizon is framed by peaks exceeding 5,000 to 6,000 meters in elevation.
