Pangong Tso is accessible primarily by road from Leh, which is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) away. The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and requires crossing the Chang La pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world at 5,360 meters (17,586 feet).
The roads are maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) and range from smooth tarmac to rugged, unpaved dirt tracks, especially as one travels further east along the lake towards Man and Merak.
There is no public rail transit, subway, or commercial airport near the lake. The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Local transportation is handled entirely by private taxis (mostly robust SUVs capable of handling the terrain), motorcycles (highly popular with tourists), and military convoys. There is no commercial boating allowed on the lake due to security reasons, though the military operates high-speed patrol vessels.
