Nubra Valley experiences a cold desert climate (Köppen classification *BWk*). Because it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the Indian monsoon has virtually no effect here, resulting in an arid environment with minimal rainfall throughout the year.
Winters (November to March) are exceedingly harsh and freezing. Temperatures frequently plummet well below zero, often reaching -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F) or lower, especially at night. During this time, the region is largely cut off from the rest of the country as snow blocks the high mountain passes.
Summers (May to September) are short, mild, and pleasant, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The sun is intensely bright and strong due to the thin atmosphere. The best time to visit is between June and September, when the weather is hospitable and the Khardung La pass is consistently navigable.
