Safety

Kargil is a highly secure and generally safe town for residents and visitors, largely due to a strong community ethos and a significant military presence.

* **Crime Rate:** Violent crime and petty theft are exceedingly low. The community is welcoming and hospitable to tourists. * **Emergency Numbers:** * National Emergency: 112 * Police: 100 * Fire: 101 * Ambulance: 108 * **Altitude Safety:** Kargil sits at an elevation of 2,676 meters (8,780 feet). While lower than Leh, visitors arriving directly from the plains may still experience mild Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Acclimatization and hydration are recommended. * **Road Safety:** The approach roads, particularly the Zoji La pass from Srinagar, can be treacherous, narrow, and prone to landslides. Travel during daylight and with experienced drivers is highly advised. * **Border Proximity:** As Kargil is close to the Line of Control (LoC), certain outlying areas require permissions to visit, and military guidelines/photography restrictions must be strictly observed.
