Kargil has a distinct religious demographic compared to the rest of Ladakh. The population is predominantly Muslim, with a vast majority adhering to the Shia sect of Islam. Prominent religious sites include the **Jama Masjid Kargil** and various *Imambargahs*, which serve as essential centers for community and religious gatherings. There are also minority populations of Sunni Muslims, Buddhists (particularly in the Mulbekh and Zanskar areas of the district), and Hindus, living together in a historically tolerant cultural tapestry.
