Recreation in Kargil is primarily outdoor and adventure-oriented. The rugged terrain offers excellent opportunities for trekking, particularly in the Suru and Zanskar valleys. Mountaineering expeditions frequently use Kargil as a base camp for scaling the imposing Nun and Kun massifs. Camping and landscape photography are highly popular in the summer months. In contrast, the harsh winters have sparked a growing passion for winter sports, with ice hockey and ice skating becoming favorite local pastimes on natural outdoor rinks.
