Hemis experiences a Cold Desert climate, classified under the Köppen system as BWk. Because it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the region receives minimal monsoon rainfall, relying almost entirely on winter snowfall for moisture.
Winters (November to March) are brutal and unforgiving. Temperatures regularly plunge below -20°C (-4°F), and the landscape is blanketed in snow, which occasionally isolates the village by making mountain passes impassable.
Summers (June to September) are short, sunny, and pleasant, offering a brief window of warmth. Daytime temperatures during these months average 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), though nights remain quite cool.
The best time to visit for general tourism, trekking, and the Hemis Festival is between late June and September. However, wildlife photographers and conservationists often visit in the depths of winter (January and February), when snow leopards descend to lower altitudes to hunt, making them easier to spot.
