Hemis is accessible primarily by road. A motorable spur road branches off the main Leh-Manali Highway at the town of Karu, crosses the Indus River, and winds its way up into the gorge to reach the village and monastery.
There is no airport or railway station in Hemis. The nearest major transport hub is the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, approximately 45 kilometers away, which connects the region to New Delhi and other major Indian cities.
Public transit is limited to occasional local buses from Leh. Most visitors arrive via private taxis, rented motorcycles, or shared jeeps. Within the village and the adjacent national park, travel is entirely on foot or pack animal; there are no roads deep inside the protected park, making it a pristine environment for trekking.
