Tourism

Diskit is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Ladakh, serving as the gateway to the wider Nubra Valley.

* **Diskit Monastery (Gompa):** Founded in the 14th century, it is the oldest and largest monastery in the Nubra Valley, perched dramatically on a rocky hill overlooking the floodplain. * **Maitreya Buddha Statue:** A towering 32-meter (106-foot) colorful statue of the Maitreya Buddha sits just below the monastery, facing down the Shyok River towards Pakistan. It was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 2010 to promote world peace. * **Base for Exploration:** Diskit is the primary base camp for visiting the nearby Hunder Sand Dunes, the hot springs of Panamik, and the border village of Turtuk.
