Diskit is located in the Nubra Valley region of the Leh district in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. The town sits on the banks of the Shyok River (the "River of Death"), a major tributary of the Indus River that originates from the Rimo Glacier.
The geography is categorized as a high-altitude cold desert. The landscape is intensely dramatic, characterized by a wide, flat river basin flanked by the steep, barren peaks of the Karakoram and Ladakh mountain ranges. Despite the harsh aridity of the surrounding mountains, the valley floor around Diskit contains patches of lush, green vegetation—supported by glacial meltwater—creating a striking oasis effect.
One of the most notable geological features nearby is the high-altitude sand dunes located just a few kilometers away between Diskit and Hunder, which are a remnant of ancient glacial and wind activities in the valley.
