Despite the challenging cold desert environment and a short growing season, agriculture in Diskit thrives in the fertile glacial meltwater valleys. The region utilizes ancient, highly effective irrigation channels that direct water from mountain streams to terraced fields.
The primary crops grown are barley, wheat, peas, and mustard. Diskit and the wider Nubra Valley are particularly famous for their horticulture. Apricots, apples, and walnuts are cultivated abundantly, with dried apricots being a major local export. In recent years, the harvesting of Seabuckthorn—a wildly growing, nutrient-rich berry—has emerged as a lucrative cooperative agricultural enterprise, used to make juices, jams, and cosmetics.
