While Bengaluru is a concrete metropolis, the peripheral regions—particularly Bengaluru Rural district—retain agricultural significance. The area historically cultivated ragi (finger millet), maize, paddy, and a variety of pulses.
Today, the region is highly specialized in floriculture and horticulture. The area surrounding Bengaluru is India's largest exporter of roses and other cut flowers. Vineyards and mango orchards (growing local varieties like Raspuri and Badami) are also prevalent in the northern outskirts. Within the city itself, there is a growing movement toward urban gardening, terrace farming, and an increasing demand for locally sourced organic produce, supported by weekend farmers' markets.
