Overview

Ranchi is the vibrant capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand, situated in the heart of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Widely affectionately known as the "City of Waterfalls," it is celebrated for its lush topography, cascading rivers, and pleasant climate. Unlike the sweltering plains of northern India, Ranchi's higher elevation historically made it a favored retreat, serving as the summer capital of undivided Bihar before Jharkhand gained statehood in 2000.

Today, Ranchi represents a fascinating intersection of indigenous tribal heritage and rapid urban modernization. It is a major administrative, educational, and industrial hub, playing a vital role in the heavy engineering and mining sectors. Beyond its economic contributions, the city holds cultural significance for the Munda, Oraon, and other indigenous communities whose traditions shape the region's art, festivals, and way of life. Globally, Ranchi is also recognized as the hometown of legendary Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
