Agriculture

While Ranchi itself is an urban center, the surrounding district relies heavily on agriculture. The undulating plateau terrain allows for both terrace farming and valley cultivation.

Rice is the principal crop grown during the Kharif (monsoon) season. The region is also highly recognized for its vegetable production—cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peas are cultivated extensively and exported to neighboring states. Beyond traditional crops, the Ranchi region is famous for lac production (a natural resin secreted by insects on host trees) and Tussar silk rearing, both of which are crucial income sources for rural and tribal farmers in the outskirts.
