Dhanbad is the second most populous city in Jharkhand (after Jamshedpur) and forms one of the largest urban agglomerations in the state. According to the 2011 census, the urban agglomeration population stood at approximately 1.16 million, with ongoing growth driven by industrial employment and educational opportunities.
The demographic fabric is highly diverse. Due to its status as a mining and industrial center, Dhanbad is a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, with large populations from Bihar, West Bengal, and other parts of India. Hinduism is the majority religion, followed by a significant Muslim population and smaller communities of Christians, Sikhs, and Jains. The primary languages spoken are Hindi, Khortha, and Bengali, with Santhali and Urdu also widely understood.
