Dhanbad is situated in the eastern part of India, nestled on the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The region is bordered by the Giridih district to the north, Bokaro to the west, and shares its eastern and southern boundaries with the Purulia district of West Bengal. The Damodar River, a vital watercourse for the region, flows through the southern expanse of the district, heavily influencing its geography and providing essential water for both industrial and domestic use.
The original physical geography of Dhanbad featured extensive dry deciduous forests. Today, while significant portions of the district have been cleared for mining, urbanization, and industrial estates, pockets of greenery and forested land still exist in the northern and western fringes. The area is exceptionally rich in natural resources, primarily bituminous coal, which is the bedrock of its geography and economy.
