Infrastructure

Infrastructure in Spiti is improving but remains vulnerable to the harsh environment.

* **Electricity:** Power is supplied primarily by the Rongtong hydro-electric project near Kaza and the national grid, but winter outages are common. To counter this, many villages and monasteries have adopted localized solar power micro-grids. * **Water:** Domestic water relies on glacial melt streams. In winter, piped water freezes, and locals must often fetch water from partially frozen rivers or localized springs. * **Telecommunications:** Connectivity has vastly improved in the last five years. BSNL and Jio provide 4G cellular service in Kaza and several prominent villages, though signal can be patchy or non-existent in deep valleys and during power outages. * **Healthcare:** Basic medical facilities are available at the Community Health Center in Kaza, but serious medical emergencies require transport (sometimes via state helicopter) to Shimla or Kullu.
