Administratively, Spiti is a sub-division of the Lahaul and Spiti district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Because the district's two valleys (Lahaul and Spiti) are separated by the high Kunzum Pass, which is closed for half the year, Spiti enjoys a degree of administrative autonomy.
The headquarters of the Spiti sub-division is the town of Kaza, where governance is led by an Additional District Magistrate (ADM), who operates under the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti (based in Keylong).
For political representation, Spiti falls under the Mandi Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency. At the state level, it is part of the Lahaul and Spiti legislative assembly constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), ensuring that the indigenous voice of the high-altitude communities is represented in the state capital of Shimla.
