Cost of living is relatively high compared to the Indian plains because almost all consumer goods, building materials, and fuels must be transported via treacherous mountain roads from mainland Himachal Pradesh. Despite these logistical challenges, median incomes have risen in recent years as the region successfully markets its pristine landscape and unique culture to the world.
