Agriculture forms a vital pillar of Solan's identity. The region is internationally recognized for its mushroom cultivation, spearheaded by the Directorate of Mushroom Research (ICAR), which provides training and high-yield spores to farmers across the country.
Equally famous is the cultivation of tomatoes, earning Solan the moniker "City of Red Gold." The terraced slopes of the district are also ideal for stone fruits such as plums, apricots, and peaches, as well as off-season vegetables like capsicum and peas. Traditional grain farming exists but is increasingly being replaced by high-value cash crops and floriculture. The state government actively promotes organic farming, reducing chemical pesticide reliance in the surrounding rural blocks.
