Shimla is located in the south-western ranges of the Himalayas, perched entirely on a ridge and its seven spurs. The city's physical geography is defined by steep, undulating terrain, thickly wooded slopes, and deep valleys.
The city is famous for being built across seven distinct hills: Inverarm Hill, Observatory Hill, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill, Bantony Hill, Elysium Hill, and Jakhoo Hill. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a rich canopy of temperate flora, including Himalayan oak, rhododendron, pine, and majestic deodar (cedar) trees, which provide a verdant backdrop to the urban sprawl.
Geologically, the region is part of the lesser Himalayas, rendering it an ecologically sensitive zone prone to landslides during heavy rains. While no major rivers flow directly through the immediate city center, the wider district is bounded by the Sutlej River to the north and the Giri River (a tributary of the Yamuna) to the south, which serve as crucial water and hydroelectric resources for the area.
