Due to its dense urbanization and steep topography, agriculture within the municipal limits of Shimla is practically non-existent. However, the broader Shimla District is an agricultural powerhouse for the state.
The surrounding hills are extensively terraced and are globally recognized for their horticulture—primarily apple orchards, which are a cornerstone of the regional economy. Additionally, farmers in the district cultivate stone fruits like cherries, peaches, and plums, alongside seasonal vegetables like potatoes and peas. Organic farming initiatives have been heavily promoted by the state government in recent years, making the district a leading supplier of organic produce to North Indian markets.
