Historically recorded as a small municipal council of around 3,500 residents in the 2011 census, Palampur has since been upgraded to a Municipal Corporation (in 2020), incorporating numerous surrounding *panchayats* (village councils). This expanded urban area has a population estimated at over 40,000 residents today.
The demographic makeup is predominantly Hindu, with a rich local culture steeped in Kangri and Pahari traditions. The gender ratio is historically favorable, and the region boasts a high literacy rate—often exceeding 90%—reflective of Himachal Pradesh's strong emphasis on education. A significant portion of the population includes serving and retired defense personnel, lending a disciplined, civic-minded character to the community.
