Topography

The topography of McLeod Ganj is marked by dramatic elevation changes. The town itself is built on a steep ridge at an altitude of approximately 2,082 meters (6,831 feet). Immediately to its north, the terrain rises sharply toward the Triund ridge, which sits at roughly 2,828 meters (9,278 feet) and serves as the gateway to the imposing Indrahar Pass. The lowest points of the immediate area descend rapidly into the Forsyth Ganj neighborhood and down to the main city of Dharamshala. Deep, narrow valleys flank the town, most notably the gorge that houses the famous Bhagsunag waterfall. Flat land is exceptionally scarce, requiring buildings to be terraced into the steep hillsides.
