Geography

McLeod Ganj is situated on the Dhauladhar Range, a southern branch of the main Himalayan chain. It looks down upon the verdant Kangra Valley to the south. The area is characterized by steep, heavily forested mountain slopes, rocky outcrops, and narrow ravines. The flora is typical of a high-altitude Himalayan ecosystem, dominated by dense forests of Himalayan oak, rhododendron, deodar (Himalayan cedar), and pine trees. The geological composition of the region is primarily metamorphic rock, with the steep terrain making the area susceptible to minor landslides during heavy monsoons. The region is rich in fresh mountain water, with numerous glacial streams trickling down from the snow-capped peaks to feed the larger rivers of the Kangra Valley.
