The economy of McLeod Ganj is almost entirely dependent on tourism, hospitality, and related service sectors. It acts as a major economic engine for the broader Dharamshala region. The town features a dense concentration of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and cafes. Retail thrives on the sale of Tibetan handicrafts, including thangkas (traditional Buddhist paintings), singing bowls, jewelry, carpets, and woolen garments. Spiritual and educational tourism also forms a significant economic pillar, with thousands of international visitors enrolling in yoga, meditation, cooking, and Tibetan language courses. The cost of living is relatively higher here than in lower altitude Indian cities due to transportation costs for goods and the high demand for limited real estate. Future economic development is focused on sustainable tourism and improving civic infrastructure to handle peak-season crowds.
