Manali is located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, sitting at an elevation of approximately 2,050 meters (6,726 feet) in the Beas River Valley. The geography is defined by the dramatic, soaring peaks of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas. The Beas River, originating from the nearby Rohtang Pass, carves its way directly through the town, providing an essential water source and dramatic valley landscapes.
The town's immediate surroundings are characterized by lush alpine meadows, terraced agricultural fields, and dense forests composed primarily of deodar cedar, pine, and oak. As one moves north of Manali toward the Rohtang Pass and the Atal Tunnel, the geography transitions from green alpine valleys into the stark, high-altitude cold deserts of the Lahaul and Spiti district.
