Because of its varying topography, Kinnaur's climate ranges from temperate in the lower valleys to extreme alpine and cold desert conditions in the upper reaches.
Winters (October to April) are famously long and severe. Heavy snowfall blankets the region, causing road closures and plummeting temperatures well below freezing, sometimes reaching -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) in higher villages. Summers (May to September) are short, crisp, and highly pleasant, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F) in the valleys.
Lower Kinnaur receives moderate rainfall during the Indian monsoon season (July to September), leaving it susceptible to landslides and flash floods. Upper Kinnaur, protected by the Greater Himalayas, sits in a rain shadow and receives minimal precipitation, largely in the form of winter snow. Under the Köppen climate classification, the region falls under Dwc (Subarctic climate) and ET (Tundra). The best times to visit are during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October).
