Transportation

Dharamshala is well-connected for a mountain city, though its internal roads are famously steep and narrow.

* **Air:** Gaggal Airport (Kangra Airport) is located about 13 km from the city center, offering daily flights to Delhi and Chandigarh. * **Rail:** The nearest broad-gauge railway station is Pathankot (approx. 85 km away). A narrow-gauge toy train, the Kangra Valley Railway, connects Pathankot to Kangra, though it is slow and prone to weather disruptions. * **Road:** National Highway 503 connects the city to the plains. Overnight Volvo buses run regularly between Dharamshala and New Delhi/Chandigarh. * **Local Transit:** Auto-rickshaws, shared taxis, and local buses are the primary modes of transport. To alleviate severe traffic on the steep roads, the *Dharamshala Skyway*, an aerial ropeway, was inaugurated in 2022, connecting Lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj in just 5 minutes.
