Because Chandigarh is a Union Territory, it is not governed by a state legislative assembly but is instead administered directly by the Government of India. The President of India appoints an Administrator to head the territory; since 1984, the Governor of Punjab has concurrently held the position of the Administrator of Chandigarh.
Local civic administration is managed by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC), which is responsible for the maintenance of roads, water supply, sanitation, and public health. The MCC is composed of elected councilors, from whom a Mayor is elected annually.
At the national level, Chandigarh is represented by one Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.
