Chandigarh's economy has transitioned over the decades from being purely government-driven to a modern, diversified economic engine. Historically known as a 'Pensioner’s Paradise' and an administrative capital, its primary employers were the state governments of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union Territory administration.
Today, the service sector dominates the local economy. IT and IT-enabled services (ITES), healthcare, education, retail, and banking are significant contributors to the city's GDP. The Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park has been a catalyst for the tech sector, attracting multinational software companies.
Chandigarh boasts one of the highest per capita incomes in India. The cost of living is relatively high compared to other Tier-II cities, driven by high real estate values and a penchant for premium consumer goods. The local economy is tightly integrated with its neighboring satellite cities, Mohali and Panchkula, which provide much of the industrial and large-scale manufacturing output for the region.
