Topography

Ahmedabad is situated on relatively flat terrain within the Sabarmati River basin. Its average elevation is approximately 53 meters (174 feet) above sea level.

There are no mountains, significant hills, or deep canyons within the city limits. The landscape is characterized by gentle plains that gradually blend into the agricultural hinterlands of Gujarat. The lowest points historically lay along the natural flood plains of the Sabarmati River. However, comprehensive riverfront development and embankment projects have largely mitigated seasonal flooding and stabilized the river's banks. The city gradually rises in elevation moving away from the river, but the changes in gradient are nearly imperceptible.
