New Delhi is governed through a unique, multi-layered administrative structure due to its status as the national capital. At the local level, it is administered by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which operates differently from other municipalities in India. Instead of an elected mayor, the NDMC is headed by a Chairperson appointed by the Government of India, reflecting the area's strategic national importance.
Above the municipal level, New Delhi falls under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), headed by a Chief Minister.
