Government

New Delhi is governed through a unique, multi-layered administrative structure due to its status as the national capital. At the local level, it is administered by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which operates differently from other municipalities in India. Instead of an elected mayor, the NDMC is headed by a Chairperson appointed by the Government of India, reflecting the area's strategic national importance.

Above the municipal level, New Delhi falls under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), headed by a Chief Minister. Furthermore, the Union Government (Federal Government) of India retains direct control over critical services such as public order, police, and land within the capital.

New Delhi is the literal seat of Indian democracy. It is home to the Sansad Bhavan (Parliament), the Supreme Court of India, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan, housing the highest elected and appointed officials of the nation.
