As of the 2011 Indian Census, the urban agglomeration of Silvassa had a population of 98,265. However, due to rapid industrialization, the population has grown significantly over the last decade, driven largely by migration. The city has a distinct demographic divide: the indigenous tribal population (such as the Warli and Dhodia) and a massive migrant workforce from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Maharashtra.
Because of this influx, Silvassa is highly cosmopolitan. While tribal dialects like Varli are spoken in the surrounding villages, Hindi, Gujarati, and Marathi serve as the primary languages of commerce and daily life in the city. The population is predominantly Hindu, with notable Muslim and Christian minorities (the latter tracing some roots back to Portuguese times or hailing from other parts of India). The gender ratio has historically been skewed, with a higher number of males due to the migrant labor demographic.
